Tip to Improve Gas Mileage in Winter

November 12th, 2014 by

Fuel economy goes down in winter for many drivers. If you live in Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth, Gorham, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland Center, Yarmouth, Windham, Freeport, Cumberland Foreside, or a surrounding area, you can improve fuel economy by following these tips.

Park your car in a garage when possible to increase the initial temperature of your engine and cabin.
Combine errands when possible so that you drive less often with a cold engine.
Minimize idling your car to warm it up. Just drive off gently after about 30 seconds; the engine will warm up faster being driven. This allows the heat to turn on sooner, decrease your fuel costs, and reduce emissions.
Don’t use seat warmers or defrosters more than necessary.
Keep your tires properly inflated.
Use the car oil recommended in the owner’s manual or ask your service advisor which oil to use.
Remove accessories that increase wind resistance, like roof racks, when you’re not using them.
Pre-heat the cabin of an electric vehicle while plugged into the charger can extend its mileage range.
For electric vehicles, use the seat warmers instead of the cabin heater to save energy and extend mileage range.
